The New Pulse of East Asian Creativity in the Heart of Shoreditch
WE ARE HERE. WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN.
East London Chinatown raised a flag
Not as a replica, but as a reclamation. This is not a gate borrowed from the past. This is a portal to the future. We are British Chinese and East Asian creatives, artists, makers, chefs, thinkers, builders. This is our space, our voice, our time.
1. A PLACE TO BE SEEN, HEARD AND FELT
We build more than shops and studios — we build visibility. For too long, East Asian presence in Britain has been quieted, misunderstood, or flattened into cliché. Shoreditch is our canvas. Our Chinatown is a living, breathing place where murals speak dialects, neon speaks heritage, and food tells truths that history books have missed.
2. TRADITION AS FUEL, NOT FOSSIL
We honour our ancestors not by freezing their legacy, but by remixing it. Our food reinvents flavours, our art defies expectation, our fashion reshapes identity. From Cantonese dim sum DJs to Korean futurist architects, from dumpling labs to rice paddy rooftops. Tradition is not a museum here. It’s a launchpad.
3. A COMMON GROUND FOR THE UNCOMMON
We are not a monolith. We are mainland and island, north and south, diaspora and homegrown, queer and straight, Cantonese, Korean, Hokkien, Malaysian, Singaporean, Vietnamese, Japanese, mixed-race, adopted, multilingual, and learning. Eastend Chinatown is intersectional. It is messy. It is magic. It is ours.
4. THE CITY IS OUR MATERIAL
We work with concrete, pixels, sound, waste, wind, and memory. We don’t ask for permission to be creative, we claim the right to reshape the urban fabric. We believe in adaptive spaces: noodle shops that host zine fairs, alleyways that host light sculptures, storefronts that become theatres of protest and play.
5. ECONOMIC POWER IS CULTURAL POWER
We are not just participants in the creative economy, we are defining it. Eastend Chinatown incubates East and Southeast Asian-led businesses, co-ops, studios and collectives. We share skills. We support local. We invest in ourselves and each other. Creativity is our currency.
6. WE DESIGN WITH COMMUNITY, NOT FOR IT
There is no Chinatown without the people. We reject top-down gentrification disguised as culture. We listen to elders. We amplify youth. We centre care. We build slow, and we build together . With mutual aid, shared kitchens, open workshops, and radical hospitality.
7. WE CELEBRATE LOUDLY
Festivals. Firecrackers. Food markets. Fashion weeks. Film screenings. Night markets. Tech showcases. Poetry slams. Our celebrations will flood the streets. We mark Lunar New Year with LED dragons and laser-cut mooncakes. We make joy contagious and political.
8. WE STAY UNAPOLOGETIC
No more shrinking. No more blending in. We confront racism with creativity, invisibility with visibility, fetishisation with futurism. We don’t wait for representation ; we are representation. Our Chinatown is not a replica of the past, it’s a prototype of the future.
THIS IS EASTEND CHINATOWN.
Not a boundary, but a beginning.
Not a monument, but a movement.
Not a gate to look at : but a door to walk through.
We are the next chapter in London’s story.
We are the Chinatown you didn’t see coming.
And we’re just getting started.
